Yesterday, June 6th, 2024, at St. Mary’s Riverside Care Home, we commemorated the 80th anniversary of D-Day 2024. Our residents, care team, and their loved ones came together to honour this significant day in history through a series of thoughtful activities and community engagement.

The day began with soulful performances from singers, bringing joy and nostalgia to our residents. This was followed by a community outing where our residents had the opportunity to watch the lighting of the Foreshore Beacon, a symbolic act of remembrance and unity.

The event saw the participation of the Mayor, the Town Crier, and servicemen and women of all ages, who gathered to pay tribute to the bravery of those who participated in the Normandy Landings. The Humber Fire and Rescue Service, along with the Coastguard, added to the solemnity of the occasion by scattering poppy wreaths into the water while the Last Post played, creating a deeply moving atmosphere.

Throughout the day, our residents and staff reflected on the importance of D-Day with the poignant reminder: “They gave their tomorrow for our today.” This day was not only a time to remember the past but also an inspiration to appreciate the sacrifices made for our freedom.

Across the UK and in France, major commemorations marked this historic event. Also known as D-Day, the Normandy Landings of 6 June 1944 were a pivotal operation that helped turn the tide of World War II in favour of the Allies. This momentous day remains a testament to courage and sacrifice.

Our celebration at St. Mary’s Riverside was a thought-provoking and inspirational day, as we honoured all those who served and remembered their invaluable contributions to our history.
