A lifelong supporter of Bradford City A.F.C. celebrated her remarkable 101st birthday in unforgettable style after care home staff organised a surprise football-themed party featuring club legends, a mascot appearance and special guests.

Residents, staff and family at Shipley Manor Care Home, operated by St Mary’s Care Homes, came together on Thursday 5th March to celebrate resident Betty Squires’ milestone birthday with a party inspired by her lifelong love of the Bantams.

Betty’s connection with the club stretches back nearly a century, where she attended her very first Bradford City match in 1935, beginning a lifelong passion for the team that has continued ever since.

The care home was transformed with Bradford City colours for the celebration, complete with themed decorations and a special birthday cake honouring the club she has supported for decades.

The highlight of the afternoon came when several surprise guests arrived to celebrate with Betty, including former Bradford City players Ian Ormondroyd and John Hendrie. They were joined by the club’s much-loved mascot Billy Bantam and renowned football commentator John Helm, who all spent time chatting with Betty and posing for photographs.

Betty was delighted by the surprise visit and the chance to celebrate her special day surrounded by family, fellow residents and football heroes.

Sharon Burton, Care Home Manager at Shipley Manor Care Home, said:
“At Shipley Manor, everything we do is centred around our residents as individuals – their passions, their life stories and the things that have always brought them joy.

“Betty’s love for Bradford City is something she has shared with us many times, and knowing she has supported the club since attending her first match in 1935 makes it even more special. Reaching her 101st birthday felt like the perfect opportunity to celebrate that passion.

“Seeing the smile on her face when the guests arrived was incredibly special for all of us. Moments like this are exactly why we do what we do.”

The celebration included music, birthday treats and plenty of Bradford City memorabilia, with residents and staff proudly wearing the club’s colours to mark the occasion.
